Making travel plans? Your FAQ for MaxFunCon West
MaxFunCon West 2012 will be held at the UCLA Lake Arrowhead Conference Center in Lake Arrowhead, California, about two hours east of Los Angeles in the San Bernadino mountains.
As in the past, MaxFunCon will begin with registration and a reception from 4-6PM on Friday. You're welcome to arrive earlier and traipse the grounds, though your room may not be ready for check-in before four. We recommend arriving on the earlier side, as there's less likely to be fog on the road earlier in the day.
MaxFunCon ends with lunch at noon on Sunday. Most participants like to use this time for goodbyes and thank-yous, but if you like, you can also take your lunch to go.
What’s the weather like?
Weather in the Spring in Lake Arrowhead can vary widely. We encourage you to check (especially for rain) before you leave, but here's some basic information. Lake Arrowhead is in temperate Southern California, but it's also high in the mountains. Daytime temperatures have often been in the low 70s with clear skies, but nighttime temps are much cooler - they often dip into the low 40s. Remember that our s'mores roast and standup show are held in the evening in outdoor venues, and you can expect temps in the low 50s.
What should I wear?
Bring something warm to wear - past MaxFunsters recommend a sweater or sweatshirt, a coat and a scarf. Some folks have enjoyed having a lap blanket for the Saturday night show.
And don’t forget your outfit for the Country Estate Party!
How do I get up there?
We encourage you to make carpool plans and share rides to the venue, which ranges from about an hour to about two hours from Southern California's major airports. Many visitors plan carpools on the MaxFunForum. Rental cars in the LA area are relatively inexpensive, and the trip is not an unpleasant one -- especially the second hour, which winds through some really lovely mountains. The venue has limited parking, so they (and we) do ask that you try to carpool and fill your car. Closer to the Con, there will be plenty of folks arranging carpools in the forum. You can also check our transportation page to help you coordinate.
What can you tell me about the conference center?
Extensive facilities include sports fields and courts, an indoor jacuzzi, a network of beautiful craftsman lodges and even a treehouse and "frontier village." Guests stay in "condolets," double-occupancy mountain lodges with individual bedrooms and bathrooms and a fireplace in every living room. Gourmet food is cooked on site, and all accommodations, meals and refreshments are included in your conference registration.
